NordPass Review (2026): Is It the Best Password Manager at This Price?

NordPass enters a crowded market -- 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Keeper, and LastPass all compete in the same space. Its advantages are a lower price than most paid alternatives, a more modern encryption algorithm, and a useful feature set that goes beyond pure password storage. After 30 days of daily use, here is what the testing showed.

Security Architecture

NordPass uses XChaCha20 encryption -- a stream cipher that Google adopted as a faster and more resilient alternative to AES-256 in environments without hardware AES acceleration. The practical difference for most users is minimal (both are currently unbreakable in any reasonable scenario), but XChaCha20 is a more modern choice and NordPass is one of very few password managers using it.

NordPass operates zero-knowledge architecture: your master password never leaves your device. NordPass derives an encryption key from it locally and encrypts your vault before syncing. The company cannot read your passwords even with full server access, and a breach of NordPass's servers would not expose readable vault data. An independent security audit confirmed this architecture in 2023.

Password generation, storage, and autofill work reliably across browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave) and mobile (iOS, Android). The browser extension autofills on most login forms without manual intervention. Import from 1Password, LastPass, Dashlane, Bitwarden, and CSV formats is straightforward -- migrating an existing vault takes under ten minutes.

Built-In Authenticator

NordPass Premium includes a TOTP authenticator (time-based one-time passwords for two-factor authentication). This replaces a separate authenticator app -- your 2FA codes live alongside the passwords they protect, in the same encrypted vault. The upside is obvious: everything in one place. The actual risk is that your password and 2FA code end up in the same vault. If someone compromises your NordPass account, they get both. Most security-conscious users use a separate authenticator app for this reason. For everyone else, the convenience is real.

Email Masking

NordPass generates disposable email aliases that forward to your real address. You give a new alias to each service -- when a site is breached or starts spamming, you delete the alias and your real email is never exposed. This feature alone is worth the subscription cost for users who regularly sign up for services that tend to share or sell email lists.

Data Breach Scanner

The breach scanner checks your stored email addresses against known breach databases and alerts you when your credentials appear in a newly published data set. In 30 days of testing, it flagged two old accounts from breaches I was not aware of. Response time from a newly published breach to an alert in NordPass was under 48 hours in both cases.

Passkey Support

NordPass stores and autofills passkeys -- the FIDO2-based passwordless authentication method that major sites (Google, Apple, GitHub) now support. As passkeys replace passwords on major platforms, having a password manager that handles them is increasingly important. NordPass does this on both the browser extension and mobile apps.

The 30-day free trial of Premium requires no credit card -- you can test every paid feature without entering payment information. This is a meaningful advantage over competitors that require a card for trials.

What NordPass Is Missing

Password history and version control -- 1Password lets you see and restore previous versions of a password entry. NordPass does not. SSH key storage -- 1Password stores SSH keys natively; NordPass does not. Advanced sharing permissions for teams -- enterprise users will find 1Password's granular permissions more suitable. If any of these matter to you, 1Password is the better choice at $2.99/mo.

NordPass's free plan limits you to one active device at a time -- if you are logged in on your phone, you are logged out on your laptop until you switch. Bitwarden's free plan has no such restriction and is a better free option for multi-device use.

Verdict

NordPass delivers on its core promise: a secure, well-designed password manager at a price significantly below the category leaders. XChaCha20 encryption, zero-knowledge architecture, built-in authenticator, email masking, and a no-credit-card 30-day trial put it ahead of most alternatives at the same or higher price. Power users and teams who need password history, SSH key storage, or advanced permissions should look at 1Password. Everyone else gets a better price from NordPass without giving up anything that matters.
